Selecting the right and best keyword may become an irresistible and costly part of your business strategies. If you fail to target the correct keyword that means you have wasted your valuable time or getting unrelated traffic or hardly any traffic at all.

That’s why in this article, we will add a complete step by step keyword research (simple & easy method) guideline which you can use to find the right and best keywords for your website using just FREE tools.

Let’s start the step by step process. Just assume we are looking for a keyword to target on the home page and it is about “Best Vacuum Cleaner”. And you need to follow this step-by-step guideline:

  • Brainstorming.
  • Checking traffic volume and competition level of your keywords.
  • Selecting the most relevant keywords.
  • Finding out some synonyms and alternative keyword phrases or LSI Terms (Latent Semantic Indexation) to enrich your content.

I personally tested ahrefs’s KD is pretty accurate (85% of the time) and you can use their Keyword Explorer feature for a quick Keywords Research (however, filtering the data with right settings is very important there).

For the rest – follow the guide below.

Step 1. Brainstorm Dynamic Keywords

Brainstorming is one of the most significant parts of keyword research. Before start researching takes some time and writes down a complete list of related topics or themes that will go with your business. Some simple strategies you can follow to brainstorm probable keywords like:

    • Ask yourself what you love to do online and spend most of your time with?
    • What the problems you faced in your life and the solutions you managed?
    • What is your dream? And what product or service or group are associated with that?
    • Have a look at your competitor’s keyword!

If you get the answer of any above questions and found a keyword or industry to work with…then take it to analyze further. Use the Keyword Researching tools below to find the most desired keywords following some super simple steps.

Here are some free tools to brainstorm your root keywords:

Step 2: Analyze Your Competitors & Keyword’s Difficulty

Once you are done with finding some group of keywords that you think are best and wants to give them a further analysis; then use the following tools or any to complete your main keyword finding process.

ahrefs : Use keyword Explorer feature of ahrefs to understand the difficulty of your keywords and an estimation of the number of backlinks required to rank your researched keyword. They have a metric called “KD” – Keyword Difficulty using which you will get a complete map of what to do.

To me, Ahrefs KD feature is the best of the bests to understand the difficulty of a KW.

SEMRush: SEMRush is simple but provides you accurate Keyword Difficulty score. Just enter on your semrush dashboard and from the left column, click on Keyword Analysis and then navigate to “Keyword Difficulty” tool.

Serpstats: Serpstat is a complete growth hacking tool with the Keyword Difficulty feature. Though, it is a premium tool; but their free plan is also handy to use.

Moz Bar: Install Moz Bar Extensions/Plugins for your Google Chrome Browser and check the PA & DA of each website that ranks on the first page against your query! The higher PA and DA of your competitors; the tougher it is for you to rank for the search term.

PA DA Mozbar

So, once you see your search keyword triggers result those have higher PA and DA below 20; you can easily rank your keywords.

Web SEO: New in the industry but can provide you some KD metrics for FREE.

KW Finder: Good for free keyword difficulty. But push you to buy their packages and that’s irritating.

If you are done with finding a great low competitive keyword with high search volume from steps 1 and 2; go forward and pick some relevant keywords to support your main keyword on your website.

Step 3: Choose the Most Relevant Keywords

Now your next step will be select the most relevant keywords from the list.

Just ask yourself, If you are a customer and looking for vacuum cleaner what types of words you would you be most likely to search for?

Which one is the buying keyword?

And choose long tail keywords gathered from Ubersuggest, AnswerThePublic or Soovle Tool mentioned above.

I have decided to select these topics and let’s have a look:

    • Best Vacuum Cleaner under $100
    • Best Vacuum Cleaner 2019
    • Best Vacuum Cleaner for pet hair

Now that I have decided to select that “Best Vacuum Cleaner under $100” is the term I would like to focus on. Now you have to figure out:

    • Worth targeting (Have to enough monthly searches volume)
    • And the Possibility of ranking

Now open your google and then go to the Google Keyword Planner and sign in. If you have no account then create a new one. Google Keyword Planner is totally free for signup. Then you have to select “Search for new keyword” and place your desired keyword.

And you can also add some filter like what country you want to target, what kind of language you will prepare and more. If you select or add your desire info then press “get Ideas”.

Next, you have to be sure to select “Keyword ideas” tab, NOT the “Ad group ideas”. In this tab, you will get two types of important info about your keyword or phrase: one is average monthly search volume and the other one is the competition level (for AdWords ad).

After plugging in ‘Best Vacuum Cleaner under $100’, you can see that it has 100-1k search volume which is good to start with.

Important Note: actually the competition level is not for you, so don’t worry. Just check the keyword on google and try to find out the weaknesses of your competitor using the Keyword Difficulty Tools I have mentioned above.

While your keyword matches all of your criteria that you wanted then select one for your homepage & inner pages.

Moving down my list of relevant keywords, again I search “Best Vacuum Cleaner 2016” and “Best Vacuum Cleaner for pet hair”. You can search for more relevant keyword and make a list of them including search volume and competition level.

You can use Ubersuggest, AnswerThePublic or Soovle tool mentioned above to find relevant keywords too.

Step 4: Find alternative Keyword and LSI Terms to add Into Your Content.

You know, Google’s algorithms become more sophisticated, so you have to cover all style and angles of a topic serve to rank best. It means that you have to include not just one or two focus keywords, but several different alternatives, synonyms, and long-tail word that to your topic.

I can suggest you an awesome and FREE tool where you can get Synonyms or amazing keyword variations named: Thesaurus.

 lsi thesaurus

Another way to brainstorm these related terms is using Google’s Related Search option. You just need to add your main keyword on Google search and then scroll to the bottom of the page. Where you can see “Searches related to Best Vacuum Cleaner”. These are the collection of those phrases which Google take into consideration related to your selected keywords.

And you have the complete information about it, like competition level, search volume, and some synonyms. In this process, you can get some long tail keywords for your next article & inner pages of your website.

Here is the wrap up of this article –

1. Find your target industry by asking questions yourself about your passion, love and interest.

2. Put your industry name on the Keyword Everywhere or AnswerThePublic Tool to generate Ideas what people search often on Google.

3. Pick any keyword from step 2 that has decent search volume (above 1500+) and put that on any Keyword Difficulty Checker tool (I have given a list above) to check the competition and understand how many backlinks or contents you may need to create to rank your own website.

4. Generate a lot of LSI or Long Tail Keywords to write your contents to support your main keyword on the homepage.
